Toronto FC Details

Toronto FC became the first Canadian franchise in Major League Soccer when it began play in 2007. The club struggled through its first decade with its first MLS playoff appearance in 2015 and an 11th-place finish in 2010 its best season. Toronto became a dominant force in the Canadian Championship, winning the trophy four times in 10 years against other Canadian teams. In 2014, the club acquired U.S. men’s national team players Michael Bradley and Jozy Altidore as well as Italian forward Sebastian Giovinco as Designated Players.

These acquisitions along with the hiring of Greg Vanney as manager in 2014 ushered in a three-year period of success for the club. Toronto FC became the first Canadian team to reach the MLS Cup in 2016. After finishing third in the Eastern Conference, Toronto defeated the Philadelphia Union, New York City FC, and the Montreal Impact to reach the MLS Cup final against the Seattle Sounders. Seattle defeated Toronto on penalties to claim the club’s first MLS Cup.

Toronto continued the club’s evolution with a successful 2017 season. The team easily won the Supporters’ Shield for the best regular-season team in MLS. Toronto bested New York Red Bulls and Columbus Crew SC to set up a rematch of the 2016 MLS Cup. A scoreless first half in the 2017 MLS Cup gave way to second-half goals by Jozy Altidore and Victor Vazquez that locked up the cup for Toronto. Altidore won the MLS Cup MVP for contributing the winning goal in the match.

Toronto’s dominance in the 2017 MLS season gave hope to fans who wanted an MLS team to win the CONCACAF Champions League. The club started its march to the final with a 2-0 victory against the Colorado Rapids. Toronto proceeded to defeat Mexican sides Tigres and Club America. The club met Chivas Guadalajara in the championship series. Toronto lost the first match 2-1 but tied the aggregate score with a 2-1 score in the second match. Chivas defeated Toronto on penalties to claim the championship.

The 30,991-seat BMO Field was Toronto FC’s home stadium from its first season. The club also maintained a red home kit through its early seasons, while adjusting away kits with gray, black, and blue variants.
