The Maple Leafs are one of the NHL’s oldest teams: they won their first Stanley Cup way back in 1918, and they won the last Stanley Cup of the Original Six era. Between 1918 and 1967, the Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup 13 times.
After the NHL’s original expansion in the 1967-68 season, hockey’s most popular team has struggled in the playoffs. The 2016-2017 season marked 50 years since Toronto’s last Stanley Cup. And the Leafs’ drought was even worse than that: Toronto hadn’t even reached the Stanley Cup Final since their championship in 1967.
The Leafs came within a game of the Stanley Cup Final in the 1993 playoffs. They faced Wayne Gretzky and the Los Angeles Kings in the conference final and took a 3 games to 2 lead in the series. In overtime of Game 6, Gretzky cut Maple Leafs forward Doug Gilmour with a high stick. The NHL’s rules at the time said Gretzky should have been ejected from the game, and the Maple Leafs should have been awarded a crucial five minute power play. But the referee missed the call, and play continued. Gretzky ended up scoring the game winning goal in overtime, and he scored a hat trick in Game 7 to eliminate the Leafs. Leafs fans will tell you that this one was stolen from them. They have a point.
After a long stretch of futility in which the Maple Leafs missed the playoffs in seven consecutive seasons and only qualified once in eleven seasons, the Maple Leafs seem to have turned things around. They reached the playoffs in consecutive seasons in 2017 and 2018, and a core of talented players that includes former first overall picks John Tavares and Auston Matthews should help the Leafs make some deep playoff runs in the coming years.
NHL Playoff Format
The NHL is split into an Eastern Conference and a Western Conference. Both conferences are made up of two divisions. The Maple Leafs play in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. 16 teams—eight from both conferences—make the playoffs.
There are four rounds in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, each best of seven games, with the winners of each side of the bracket facing each other in the Stanley Cup Final.
