UNLV Rebels Basketball Details
The UNLV Runnin’ Rebels are one of the winningest college basketball teams in history -- in fact, the programs ranks fifth overall in NCAA Division I winning percentage, behind only Kentucky, UNC, Kansas, and Duke. UNLV has its fair share of hardware as well, winning the Mountain West Conference 12 times and appearing in 20 NCAA Tournaments. Their most memorable postseason run was March Madness in 1990, which ended in the program’s first and only championship. Lead by coach Jerry Tarkanian and star players Anderson Hunt and Larry Johnson, the Rebels blew out Duke 103-73 in the final, becoming the first and only team to score more than 100 points in a championship game. As UNLV plays in the Mountain West, their victory marks the last time a non-power-conference school took home the NCAA Tournament title.
Marvin Menzies is the Rebel’s newly appointed head coach, who took over in 2016 after a successful career with New Mexico State, where he won the 2015 WAC Coach of the Year. His job will be to turn things around for a program that finished the 2016-2017 season with a conference record of 4-14, last in the Mountain West Conference behind long-time rivals Nevada and San Diego State. Six new recruits should help the cause in Vegas, an impressive class spearheaded by four-star recruit Shakur Juiston. Juiston was the National Junior College Player of the Year last season, a powerful forward who averaged a double-double at Hutchinson Community College. Another star playing joining the Rebels this season is Amauri Hardy. Hardy is a four-star recruit from Michigan who averaged 29 points, seven rebounds and six assists per game as a senior in high school, and was ranked the no. 22 point guard by ESPN in his class. Brandon McCoy, a 6’11” center, rounds out the class and will add some important depth in the Runnin’ Rebels frontcourt.
