USC Trojans Football Details
Clay Helton spent multiple stints as USC’s interim head coach before the team decided to put him in charge of the team officially in November of 2015. That was after Helton led the Trojans to a 5-4 record in the 2015 season, and he followed that up with a remarkable 2016 season. USC went 10-3 last year and ended up defeating Penn State in an epic Rose Bowl game. The most impressive part about that 2016 season just might be that the Trojans started the year at 1-3. That means that they rattled off nine straight victories to end the year, and that has the team feeling giddy about what could be in 2017. The feeling around the program is that there just might be a 12th national title coming back to Los Angeles.
The reason this Trojans team is as dangerous as any in the country is because of the offense. Sam Darnold is the man under center for USC, and there’s a strong chance that he’ll go first overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. Darnold led the Trojans to a 9-1 record as the starter in 2016, and he threw for 3,086 yards with 31 touchdowns and only nine picks on the year. His Rose Bowl performance was the stuff of legends, as he threw for 453 yards with five touchdowns in the 52-49 victory. Now that he’s had some more seasoning, it’s safe to say that there isn’t a better pocket passer in all of college football. The running game is also rather dynamic, as Ronald Jones II is one of the best backs in the country. Jones rushed for 2,069 yards over his first two seasons with the Trojans, but he is better now than ever. He takes a ton of pressure off of Darnold and allows USC’s defense to rest as he eats up yards.
