Vancouver Canucks Details

After a stellar 2014-15 season (101 points and 48 wins), the Vancouver Canucks have had a rough stretch over the past two seasons. Finishing 6th two seasons ago and 7th last season, the Canucks and head coach Willie Desjardins struggled to repeat success. In fact, this led to the dismissal of Desjardins and the hiring of Travis Green, who previously coached the AHL’s Utica Comets. Unfortunately for Desjardins and the Canucks, 2016-17 didn’t go well for the team. Finishing 7th in the Pacific Division with 69 points and just 30 wins, Vancouver’s veteran team struggled. While the Sedin twins – Henrik and Daniel – finished the year with 50 and 44 points respectively, it wasn’t nearly enough to help an offense that ended up 29th in the NHL. The 36-year-olds will return this upcoming season but will surely see a smaller role in order to help the younger guys succeed.

Speaking of younger guys, 21-year-old Bo “Score-vat” Horvat finished last season atop the team in points with 52. 20 goals and 32 assists made up Horvat’s third season and he’ll surely be expected to increase that point total in the upcoming year. Sweden’s native son Sven Baertschi has been a welcomed addition over the past two seasons. Last year, he finished the campaign with 18 goals and 17 assists. Look for his name to light the lamp even more in 2017-18. With only one 20-goal scorer last year, it will be crucial for players like Horvat, Baertschi, Brandon Sutter, and Markus Granlund to generate offense and help Vancouver win offensive battles against fellow Western Conference teams.
