Vancouver Whitecaps FC Details

MLS followers may state that Vancouver fans have waited a long time for their soccer club to make big-league waves. But in truth, the Whitecaps have been making history long before Major League Soccer existed.

It was 1976 when the 'Caps made their first playoff appearance in the North American Soccer League. (Their opponents, the Seattle Sounders, are well-familiar to MLS fans.) Three years later, the Vancouver Whitecaps became the city's first professional sports team to win a major North American Championship by defeating the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Almost 100,000 people lined Vancouver's Robson Street for a celebratory parade.

In 1983, Vancouver faced Seattle again in the Soccer Bowl championship match at BC Place Stadium. The NASL would dissolve just one year later, but the Whitecaps surfaced again in 1986 as the "86ers," members of the Canadian Soccer League. The Vancouver 86ers quickly rose to the top of the CSL, winning four-straight championship titles. At one point, the club went 46 consecutive matches without losing, setting more records in the process.

The club's name was changed back to "The Whitecaps" by popular demand after Y2K, but it took almost another decade for an MLS bid to become reality. Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber announced in 2009 that Vancouver would become the 17th franchise to take the MLS pitch.

Results in America's major football league have been modest, but promising. The club has only suffered one losing season since 2012. In 2015, the Whitecaps beat the Montreal Impact 4-2 over two ties to win the Canadian Championship, finished in second place in the MLS Western Conference with 16 wins, and finished third in the CONCACAF Champions League. Vancouver would end its season losing 2-0 to eventual MLS Cup champion Portland. GK David Ousted was named to the 2015 MLS All-Star team and finished runner-up for Goalkeeper of the Year.

Vancouver appears to be gearing up for a defense-first, kick-and-chase style in '18. But that's not a bad plan if they can defend well and produce speedy runs from the wing. The Whitecaps have signed a pair of nimble forwards, Anthony Blondell of Venezuela and former New England standout Kei Kamara. Kamara, a 33-year-old veteran, scored 12 goals in 2017 and should be the catalyst for this Vancouver offense.
