Vanderbilt Commodores Basketball Details
The Vanderbilt Commodores basketball program is one of the oldest in the country, dating back to 1900 when a formal team was created to compete against the local YMCA. They’ve certainly moved on up the ranks since then, as they now play in the competitive Southeastern Conference and compete in the Memorial Gymnasium, a unique court that gives the team a distinct edge when playing on their own turf. The Commodores’ gymnasium has benches at the ends of the court, rather than the standard side benches present in most other arenas. The Commodores have won three conference regular season titles, the most recent in 1993. Vandy also has 15 NCAA Tournament appearances to its name, with an Elite Eight run in 1965. They have also competed in eleven NIT tournaments, winning in 1990.
The Commodores finished the 2016-2017 season with a conference record 10-8, seventh in Southeastern Conference. Their overall record was 19-16. This past season was Coach Bryce Drew’s first-year, during which he impressively brought the team to the NCAA Tournament first round, where they then lost to Northwestern 66-68. The Commodores are determined to make the 2017-2018 season a good one, as they look to recover from the loss of forward Luke Kornet to the New York Knicks. There are a few new exciting recruits joining the Commodores this season, including four-star point guard Saben Lee, along with four-star center Ejike Obinna, and three-star center and guard Maxwell Evans. These players will be strong additions to the team for seasons ahead, joining the ranks of all-around player Jeff Roberson and Matthew Fisher-Davis. Vanderbilt will be participating in the Big 12/SEC Challenge on January 27th against TCU at home. They currently hold a 4-1 series advantage over TCU and are 3-0 in games played in Memorial Gym against TCU.
