Safeco Field Details
Built as a replacement to the Kingdome, Safeco Field is the home of the Seattle Mariners. The venue opened in 1999 and, like its predecessor, can be a stadium with a closed roof. Unlike the Kingdome, though, Safeco Field doesn't feature artificial turf, and has a retractable roof, making it an optimal venue in many different types of conditions. It has played host to a number of high profile teams and events in its relatively short history.
In baseball, Safeco Field was the home of the winningest team in Major League Baseball regular season history. The 2001 Seattle Mariners, with Ichiro as the star player, won 116 games in that season before later falling in the American League Championship Series to the New York Yankees. It also hosted the 2001 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, known for Cal Ripken Jr. launching a home run in the final All-Star Game of his storied career.
Safeco Field also played host to one of the biggest spectacles in entertainment, Wrestlemania XIX in 2003. The event is best remembered for an iconic match between The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin, as well as the main event between Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle, where Lesnar won the WWE Championship to close out the show. Of course, Lesnar's failed attempt at a Shooting Star Press on Angle may be remembered more than the result of the match.
Perhaps unfortunately for the city of Seattle, Safeco Field and the Seattle Seahawks’ CenturyLink Field were used as a reason as to why the city did not want to fund a new arena for the Seattle Supersonics. With public funds already being used for two stadiums, city officials did not want to add a third, which resulted in the Supersonics being sold and moved to Oklahoma City, where they are now the Thunder.
Q: Where is the best place to sit at Safeco Field?
A: The 100s sections in foul territory are the best seats in the house, as they are all reasonably close to the field thanks to the way Safeco Field is structured. These seats, however, can be pricey, and a better option may be the bleacher seats out in left field. These seats are behind the bullpens for both teams, which make it possible to know who is warming up before they get the call to enter the game.
Q: Safeco Field tips and tricks
A: Gates at Safeco Field open two hours before the start of the game, but if you are one of the first 1,000 fans to get to the Center Field Gate, you can get into The 'Pen, which features eclectic food options and cocktail lounge. Whatever you do, be sure to get to the park an hour and a half before game time, and make sure you catch batting practice and warmups.
Q: Safeco Field club areas
A: The Diamond Club, All-Star Club, and Terrace Club are Safeco Field's club seating options. The Diamond Club features seating behind home plate, VIP parking, private entrances, and a buffet and open bar to enjoy. The All-Star Club gives patrons an all-inclusive buffet and dessert bar, as well as VIP parking. The Terrace Club is a level of the ballpark only available to club members, and offers eclectic food vendors to enjoy.
Q: What makes Safeco Field unique?
A: The food options at Safeco Field are what truly makes it unique. From spins on classic dishes to grasshoppers, there is something for everyone to eat, which always makes a trip to the ballpark better.
