Xcel Energy Center

In St. Paul Minnesota, the Xcel Energy Center (sometimes just called "the X"), is a well-loved venue for hockey and more. True to its home, the Xcel Energy Center is all about ice hockey. In the concourse, for instance, you'll find a jersey from every high school hockey team in the state.

As the home of the Minnesota Wild, the Xcel Energy Center hosted the first Wild game shortly after opening in 2000. During that game, the Minnesota Wild bested the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, in a 3-1 victory. From there, the Center saw 409 consecutive sellout crowds come to Wild games over the course of nine seasons. In 2014, ESPN named the Xcel Energy Center the 3rd best stadium experience in North America.

Today, Minnesota Wild games are still plenty of fun. The Xcel Energy Center has a unique set of features, including four "crow's nest" platforms in each corner of the stadium. Two are regularly in use, supporting an organ built into a Zamboni on one side, and a lighthouse-shaped fog horn -- used to announce Wild goals -- on the other. Smaller sports teams and tournaments use the Center as well.

Beyond sports, this is a big venue for concerts and musical guests as well as other events such as political rallies. The 2008 Republican National Convention, for instance, was at the Xcel Energy Center. Combining the two, the politically motivated Vote for Change Tour came to St. Paul in 2004. Performers included Bruce Springsteen and Bright Eyes. Other performances that have taken place at the Xcel Energy Center include Miley Cyrus, AC/DC, Yanni, John Mayer, and Shania Twain.

Notably, the venue is quite green, and has received three different certifications for sustainable construction and operation. To earn these awards, the stadium has made massive changes to standardize operating procedures for a venue of this size. 60% of all waste at the facility is recycled, and as much as 1,500 gallons of water are saved every day thanks to rain sensing technology.
