Villanova Wildcats Basketball Details
Coming out of the Big East Conference, the Villanova Wildcats are led by head coach Jay Wright, who took the team to a second straight NCAA tournament bid after a phenomenal buzzer-beater win in the 2016 National Championship game. When Kris Jenkins hit that 3-pointer to beat UNC and win the title, it put the Villanova on the map as a force to be reckoned with in men’s basketball. The 2016-17 season saw another brilliant regular season campaign, as the team finished 1st in the Big East, winning the conference tournament and grabbing the automatic bid for the Tourney. Unfortunately, the tourney run was short-lived, as the Wildcats lost 65-62 to Wisconsin in the second round. Looking forward to this season, the Wildcats lose seniors Josh Hart, Kris Jenkins, Denny Grace, and Darryl Reynolds. Hart and Jenkins are the major losses, as Hart averaged 18.7 points per game while Jenkins averaged 13.1.
In the upcoming 2017-18 season, the Wildcats will look to junior Jalen Brunson for leadership on and off the floor. The guard averaged 14.7 points and 4.1 assists last season. Junior Mikal Bridges (9.8 points per game) returns as well as sophomore guard Donte DiVincenzo (8.8 points per game). Incoming freshmen Jermaine Samuels, Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree, and Collin Gillespie will look to make big impacts on a younger Nova squad. The Wildcats will look to have another wonderful season at home, playing in The Pavilion – or Wells Fargo Center for high-attendance games – in Villanova, Pennsylvania. Nova went 14-1 at home last season.
