Washington Capitals Details
The NHL expanded to the US capital before the 1974-75 season. Things in DC got off to a shaky start: the Capitals won only eight games out of eighty in their inaugural season and only won eleven games the next year. But the Capitals eventually built a strong roster—including hall of fame players like Mike Gartner and Rod Langway—and the Capitals made the playoffs consistently through the most of the 1980s and early 1990s.
In 1998, the Capitals made their first appearance in the Stanley Cup Final. With Olaf Kolzig leading the way in net, the Caps dispatched the Bruins, Senators, and Sabres in the first three rounds, winning six games in overtime on the way. In the Stanley Cup Final, however, they were overmatched against the Detroit Red Wings and lost the series in four games.
Everything changed for the Capitals, who had suffered through a few disappointing seasons, when they drafted Alexander Ovechkin with the #1 pick in 2004. Ovechkin had an immediate impact in the NHL: he scored 52 goals in his rookie season and won the Calder Trophy as the Rookie of the Year.
During the Ovechkin era, the Capitals developed a reputation for disappointing playoff finishes. They finished the regular season in first place three times between 2009 and 2017 but never advanced past the second round of the playoffs. In 2018, the Capitals faced the defending champion Pittsburgh Penguins—who had eliminated the Capitals in many playoff series over prior decade—in the second round. This time, the Capitals finally came out on top, with Evgeny Kuznetsov scoring a dramatic series-winning goal in overtime of Game 6. They eventually advanced to the Stanley Cup Final and defeated the Vegas Golden Knights in five games to win the franchise’s first Stanley Cup.
Washington Capitals Schedule
The Capitals begin the 2018-19 season at home on October 3, 2018. They’ll raise their Stanley Cup Champions banner before they take the ice against the Boston Bruins. The Caps end their season on April 7, 2019 with a home game against the New York Islanders.
How much do Capitals tickets cost?
The Capitals play at Capital One Arena, located in the Chinatown area of Washington DC. The average resale price for a ticket to a Capitals game is $82. Keep in mind that this price is an average, and that tickets may be available at a wide variety of price points. The location of your seat can bring the price up or down. The teams switch sides at the end of each period, which means that the Capitals will shoot at one side of the arena in two out of three periods. The side where the home team shoots twice is generally more expensive. It’s also usually more expensive to sit close to the glass.
When do the Capitals play the Penguins?
Alexander Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby were both regarded as franchise players when they came into the league in 2005, and neither has disappointed. Games between the Capitals and Penguins have been a chance to see two of the best players in the world play each other.
The Capitals and Penguins face each other four times during the 2018-19 season. They first play in Pittsburgh on October 4, 2018. The Capitals travel to Pittsburgh again for another game against the Penguins on March 12, 2019. The Penguins and Caps play in DC on November 7 and December 19, 2018.
