The Capitol City lived up to its name in the Washington Football Team's postseason heyday. Washington stretched their league dominance over a decade, earning seven playoff berths, four conference titles, and three Lombardi trophies from 1981 to 1991. It was one of the most dominant playoff stretches the league has ever seen.
The roster was loaded. At Quarterback was Joe Theismann — who ran the offense and won Super Bowl XVII (1982) before a career-ending leg injury in 1985. Running back John Riggins and wide receiver Art Monk rounded out the skill positions. But don’t forget the real master of his craft: head coach Joe Gibbs.
Gibbs inherited a good-but-not-great team in the late-70s. Washington had no problem making the playoffs, and certainly had some talent, but could not quite make the deep run and maximize their potential.
The 1982 season saw a player’s strike, simultaneously shortening the regular season and extending the playoffs. After defeating the Minnesota Vikings in the playoffs, Washington faced their deepest, most-hated rivals: the Dallas Cowboys. Behind a stout defensive performance, Washington won 31-17 and earned the right to compete in Super Bowl XVII.
Washington faced the Miami Dolphins. Down 17-13 on fourth-and-inches, Riggins tore off a 43-yard touchdown, turning the tides and paving the way for a 27-17 Super Bowl XVII victory. The next year, Washington made the Super Bowl again, this time suffering a loss to the Oakland Raiders, 38-9.
But it was far from over. Washington made the championship game again in the1987-8 NFL season, where they faced the Denver Broncos. The Broncos started hot, forcing an early 10-0 lead. But Washington QB Doug Williams brought his team back, scoring four touchdowns in the second quarter and posting 42 unanswered points. Washington was deemed champions again.
The era came to a close in the 1991-2 season. The Burgundy and Gold ran off eleven-straight wins to start the season thanks to a league-leading offense and top-ranking defense; The defense posted three shut outs in the regular season. After decimating the Atlanta Falcons and Detroit Lions, Washington defeated the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXVII, 37-24.
