Washington Nationals Details

Major League Baseball just keeps coming back to the US capital: the Nationals are the fourth MLB team to play in Washington D.C. (the first three, although they were different franchises, were each called the Washington Senators). The Nationals franchise joined the National League in 1969 as the Montreal Expos. The team made the playoffs only once during its time in Montreal.

The Nationals moved to Washington after the Expos left Montreal following the 2004 season. The team plays at Nationals Park, located in the Navy Yard neighborhood of Washington, D.C.

Nationals fandom spans across five states plus D.C.

Based on an analysis of SeatGeek data, the Nationals are the top team in 186 U.S. counties, seventh-most in the MLB. Those counties stretch across five states (Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and North Carolina) plus D.C. The Nats border the Orioles to the northeast, the Pirates to the west, and the Braves to the south.

Additional findings from our data include:

  • The Braves, with strong support across the southeastern U.S., are the most popular team in 515 counties -- most in the MLB
  • The Mariners, who control Alaska and much of the Pacific Northwest, are the team that covers the greatest land area
  • The Braves are also in control of the most “out of state counties” with 360, followed by the Royals (223) and Cardinals (205)
  • Baseball allegiance in Pennsylvania is split among seven teams, more than any other state
