Washington Nationals Details

Washington Nationals

Major League Baseball just keeps coming back to the US capital: the Nationals are the fourth MLB team to play in Washington D.C. (the first three, although they were different franchises, were each called the Washington Senators). The Nationals franchise joined the National League in 1969 as the Montreal Expos. The team made the playoffs only once during its time in Montreal.

The Nationals moved to Washington after the Expos left Montreal following the 2004 season. The team struggled in its first years after moving to Washington, but the Nationals’ fortunes started to turn around with the rise of Bryce Harper. Harper was the first overall pick in the 2010 draft and, at just 19 years old, was the NL Rookie of the Year in 2012. As a rookie, Harper led the team to its first NL East title in Washington, but the team lost in the NLDS.

Nationals fans have endured a number of playoff disappointments over the years, Following their 2012 NL East title, the Nationals won the division again in 2014 and 2016. Although the team was among the best in the regular season, the Nationals struggled in the ALDS, and have not been able to advance to the National League Championship Series. They are the only team in the NL to have never won the Pennant.

In 2017, the Nationals won 97 games and won the NL East for a second consecutive year. Ryan Zimmerman led the 2017 Nationals with 36 home runs. Max Scherzer won the Cy Young award and led the team with 16 wins and 268 strikeouts. Washington’s season ended again in the NLDS after they lost a close five game series to the Chicago Cubs.

It’s clear that the Nationals have the talent to make a deep playoff run, and a coaching change could be just what the team needs to make that a reality in 2018. Dave Martinez will manage the team in 2018.
