So much happened before Dorothy dropped in. Wicked is the musical that has been capturing audiences’ hearts since its Broadway premiere in 2003. A modern retelling of a beloved classic, Wicked focuses on the beginnings of the two witches of Oz — one a popular, bubbly blonde and the other a smart and fiery — but misunderstood — girl with emerald green skin. Wicked is a Broadway sensation enjoying one of the longest runs in history. Shattering box office records around the world, it’s one of the highest-grossing musicals of all time alongside The Lion King and The Phantom of the Opera.
Wicked the musical is based on the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire. It tells the story of Elphaba (Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda (Glinda the Good Witch), unlikely friends who grow up together facing adversity, struggling with opposing viewpoints, rivaling over love interests, and ultimately facing off between good and wicked in the Land of Oz. Wicked features music and lyrics by famed Broadway and film composer Stephen Schwartz (Pippin, Godspell) and book by television writer Winnie Holzman (My So Called Life, Thirtysomething). The original Broadway cast featured singing icons Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda and Idina Menzel as Elphaba. Broadway legend Joel Grey was cast as the Wizard.
After a three month initial run in San Francisco, Wicked premiered on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre in October 2003 and has played at the theatre ever since. A typical performance is 2 hours and 45 minutes with one intermission.
The Gershwin Theatre, named after composer Ira Gershwin, is located at 222 West 51st in Midtown Manhattan. It opened in 1972 and features a modernist Art Nouveau design. It is a large theater by Broadway standards, with seating for more than 1,900 patrons. The Gershwin also has one of the largest Broadway stages. Past productions prior to Wicked have included Oklahoma!, Annie, Fiddler on the Roof, and Singin’ in the Rain. During the last week of 2013, the Gershwin Theatre shattered a Broadway box office record, grossing $3.2 million with Wicked, making it the highest grossing week in history at that time.
Wicked is not only loved by audiences, but by critics and theater peers as well. The show was honored in 2004 with 10 Tony award nominations and the award for Best Actress (Idina Menzel), Best Set Design and Best Costume Design. The musical went on to win six Drama Desk Awards including Best Musical and a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album.
On average, a ticket to see Wicked in New York City will likely run fans a bit more than $150. However, this can vary depending on the day of week or time of the show.
