Get ready to rumble – the 36th annual Royal Rumble will return to San Antonio, TX in January 2023 for a night of pure chaos and entertainment. Dating back to 1988, the Royal Rumble has become one of the world’s most significant WWE events, drawing in tens of thousands of wrestling fans each year.

While 2023 is only six weeks away, the Royal Rumble has already broken the company’s record for ticket sales, surpassing $5 million in revenue. Here is everything you need to know about the Royal Rumble fest.

What is the Royal Rumble?

The Royal Rumble began in 1988 as a match of just twenty men and has since grown to host both men and women. The pay-per-view event usually consists of the Royal Rumble match, championship matches, universal matches and more.

The Royal Rumble match is modeled after the classic battle royal format, where several wrestlers enter the ring at timed intervals rather than simultaneously. Participants are given a lottery number before the event, determining the order in which wrestlers are called to enter the ring. A new number is called every 90 to 120 seconds.

Participants must eliminate all other opponents and be the last man or woman standing to win the Royal Rumble championship crown.

Contestants are considered to be eliminated anytime they cross over the top rope and have both feet touch the floor outside of the ring. It doesn’t matter if they were thrown over the top rope or voluntarily jumped – exiting the ring is an automatic out.

Since 1993, the Royal Rumble winner has been awarded a title match for the championship at WWE WrestleMania. Winners have the option of challenging the WWE Championship on RAW or the WWE Championship on SmackDown.

Winners also have the option to put their championship opportunity on the line by challenging an opponent to a match before the WWE Championship.

In 2006, Randy Orton provoked Ray Mysterio into putting his championship opportunity on the line for a match at the No Way Out event. Randy Orton went on to win the match, but Ray Mysterio was later reinstated at WrestleMania and won the world championship match.

The high stake prize, bragging rights and overall lack of rules make the Royal Rumble a highly competitive and intense event.
