Sporting Kansas City began as a club known as the Kansas City Wiz during Major League Soccer’s inaugural season in 1996. The Wiz became the Wizards in 1997, a name they would keep until rebranding as Sporting Kansas City in 2011. The club shared Arrowhead Stadium with the Kansas City Chiefs until 2007 when the Wizards agreed to play in CommunityAmerica Ballpark during development of its own stadium. Sporting Kansas City began play in Livestrong Sporting Park in 2011, a stadium later called Sporting Park and Children’s Mercy Park.
During its early seasons, Kansas City won trophies across multiple competitions. Kansas City won the U.S. Open Cup tournament four times between 2004 and 2017. The 2000 season was notable for the club’s Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup victories. After finishing the regular season as the best team, the Kansas City Wizards defeated the Colorado Rapids and the Los Angeles Galaxy on the way to an MLS Cup match with the Chicago Fire. Miklos Molnar scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory with U.S. men’s national team goalkeeper Tony Meola winning the game’s MVP. Meola was previously named the league’s regular season MVP and Goalkeeper of the Year for the 2000 season.
Sporting Kansas City won the 2013 MLS Cup final after taking second in the Supporters’ Shield race. The club defeated the New England Revolution in extra time in the quarterfinals and won the Western Conference final against Houston Dynamo. Kansas City met Real Salt Lake in the MLS Cup final, which went to penalties. After 10 rounds, Aurelien Collin’s goal and Lovel Palmer’s miss led to Sporting Kansas City’s victory. Collin was named the MLS Cup MVP for his heroics.
A notable element of Kansas City’s evolution as an MLS club was the development of its kit. During the first two seasons, the Kansas City Wiz and Wizards wore jerseys with rainbow stripes separating blue sleeves from black torsos. The Wizards shifted to a black home kit with horizontal rainbow stripes for two seasons before adopting blue as its primary color. Sporting Kansas City moved to a light blue uniform with its 2011 rebrand.
