FC Dallas Details

Major League Soccer has its share of connections with the National Football League. But the MLS is also tied to the pigskin legacy of the defunct American Football League, thanks to the Hunt family.

The Hunts, owners of the Kansas City Chiefs, founded FC Dallas (then known as the Dallas Burn) in 1996 as one of ten charter members of the league. To accentuate the American football connection, the club played home matches at the Cotton Bowl. As early as 1997, Hunt's boys reached the Western Conference MLS Cup finals, and defeated reigning MLS champion D.C. United to win the U.S. Open Cup.

Jason Kreis was arguably the biggest star of the Dallas Burn, an all-time franchise leader in appearances who scored 91 goals and 65 assists (65). The forward and part-time midfielder won league MVP honors in 1999. Carlos Ruiz was also a multi-season star. But it was full-time midfielder Oscar Pareja who came to help define the Burn and later FC Dallas with immaculate play and coaching.

Meanwhile, the Dallas Burn became "FC Dallas" in 2005 during an overall league transformation to a more worldly vibe. The club reached the MLS Cup Final in 2010 before losing on a late own-goal during an extra-cold spell in Toronto. Results were modest for the next four seasons, but Dallas finished first in the Western Conference in 2015 and in 2016 the franchise claimed its second U.S. Open Cup trophy and a Supporters' Shield.

2017 saw the club miss the postseason with a winning record of 11 wins, 10 losses and 13 ties. But supporters have a reason to be hopeful, as key performer Mauro Diaz is finally looking healthy after dealing with an Achilles injury that has plagued the star midfielder for multiple seasons. Diaz's absence forced Pareja forced to shift his squad to a 4-4-2 formation at the beginning of the 2017 season, instead of the manager's preferred 4-3-3. But when the 23-year-old Argentine returned last May, he underwhelmed due to lingering effects of the mishap. Pareja believes that Diaz has fully recovered and is ready to give the club a much-needed boost in 2018.

The franchise has also turned over a new leaf, recruiting European pros instead of focusing solely on Latin America. Reto Ziegler of Switzerland will play for FC Dallas in the upcoming season, and the club has also added Anton Nedyalkov who has appeared several times for the Bulgarian national team in World Cup qualification matches.
