3/25/15: A year ago, there was very little support for the Kansas City Royals to win the American League Pennant and get to the World Series. That actually happened. Heading into the 2015 season, the sentiment is exactly the same. Sure, the Royals overachieved last season, but they did it. Now they have the experience and confidence, so they should at least be given some consideration of doing it again. The did lose ace James Shields as well as designated hitter Billy Butler and right fielder Norichika Aoki, but give this team credit where it is due. They did it last year and they can do it again.
3/18/15: It is almost time for the real games to start, and for those that may have forgotten, the Kansas City Royals are the reigning American League champions. The Royals have made some moves in the offseason, including signing Casey Kotchman, who is trying to make a comeback, as well as right-handed pitcher Chris Young. Unfortunately, the team has lost pitcher Tim Collins for the entire 2015 season, as he is undergoing Tommy John surgery. The Royals will try to recreate the magic that got them to the World Series last season, though the rest of the AL Central will not be caught napping again.
3/11/15: The Kansas City Royals have been looking for starting pitchers, especially since staff ace James Shields fled for the rock star team that San Diego is putting together. So they signed veteran Chris Young to a one year deal - which is pretty standard. Except one has to wonder who negotiated this deal for Young? Did Rickey Williams give Young Master P's number? The deal has a $675,000 base salary and over $5.3 million in incentives. In other words, his incentives are worth more than seven times his base salary. It is probably pretty safe for the Royals and at least provides some cheap depth.
3/4/15: Veteran pitcher Joe Blanton decided that retirement was not for him, at least not yet, and has shown up at training camp with the Kansas City Royals. Blanton has been a starter for almost his entire career, but the Royals have made it known that they are only interested in him for a bullpen role. In fact, of his 265 career appearances, 248 have been as a starter. KC had one of the best bullpens in the Majors last season and there is no reason to think differently now. Bullpens have become increasingly important in baseball over the past 10 to 15 years and there seems to be a correlation between a strong pen and winning in the playoffs.
2/25/15: Royals outfielder Alex Gordon may not be long for Kansas City. He is on the roster for 2015, but has a player option for 2016 and has not committed to the Royals for that season. Gordon has been outstanding for the past few years. He has won four consecutive Gold Gloves and been named to the past two All-Star teams. If Gordon stays, he would make $12.5 million. He will be 32 before the start of the 2016 season, and may just try free agency to get one last big contract - which may be more than the Royals are inclined or able to pay.
2/18/15: Many experts may not think it is likely that the Kansas City Royals will repeat as American League Champs, but they are the same people that did not think the Royals had a chance to get to the World Series last season. The reigning AL Champs have been fine tuning their roster. Of course, they were not able to keep pitcher James Shields, who wound up signing with the San Diego Padres. However, they have signed Joe Blanton to a minor league deal, and he could play his way into a rotation spot. Blanton was a pretty good pitcher a few years ago, though has struggled recently. Perhaps a change of scenery and new pitching coach is all he needs.
1/7/15: The Royals hope to have Alex Gordon at full health next season, unlike much of the 2014 campaign. Gordon played, for the most part but had wrist discomfort. He did miss a few games in mid-season, though. That may have shown down the stretch as his batting average dropped from .266 in regular season to .204 in the playoffs. Of course, much better pitching and being on a bigger stage could have something to do with that. Gordon had wrist surgery recently and is expected to be fully recovered in time for spring training. It will be an interesting year for Kansas City, who will try to get back to the World Series following their surprising 2014 run.
11/12/14: It is not always a true measure, but one can often gauge how good a team is by the awards their players collect. The Royals had a terrific run through the playoffs and would have been a worthy World Series champion had they defeated the San Francisco Giants. At least some players are getting some due. Left fielder Alex Gordon won a Gold Glove last week, then followed that up with the Platinum Glove - given to the best defensive player in each league who also won a Gold Glove. So congratulations to him, and to Yadier Molina, who won in the National League.
11/5/14: The Kansas City Royals were among the more improbable World Series participants, but showed they were a worthy one. KC got into the playoffs as a wild card and promptly dispatched the Oakland A's, L.A. Angels and Baltimore Orioles to win the American League Pennant. The Royals played with heart in the World Series against the San Francisco Giants, but just could not seem to solve pitcher Madison Bumgarner - who had one of the greatest postseasons in history. The Royals fell in Game 7, 3-2, but have indeed proven that they are a team that the city can be proud of again.
10/28/14: It all comes down to one, possibly two games. The World Series is on the line and the Kansas City Royals need a big night tonight to force a Game 7. The series was split after the first round in KC, but San Francisco took Games 4 and 5 at home to put the Royals on the brink of elimination. Giants ace Madison Bumgarner pitched a complete game gem in Game 5, but the good news is that it is likely that the Royals will not see him again if they can win tonight. It has a been a magical season by any measure for Kansas City, and the team and fans hope that it lasts one more day.
10/22/14: Congratulations to the Kansas City Royals for sweeping the Baltimore Orioles in four games to advance to the World Series. The Royals have played eight games in the postseason and have won them all, including the Wild Card Game against the Oakland A's. This is the first time since 1985 that the Royals have been in the playoffs, and they won the World Series against the cross-state St. Louis Cardinals that season. KC is up against the San Francisco Giants this time, who eliminated the Cardinals last week. Games 1 and 2 are in Kansas City tonight and tomorrow (October 21 and 22) before heading out west for Games 3, 4 and 5 (if needed).
10/14/14: Game 3 of the American League Championship Series was postponed due to rain, but that still means that the Royals are up two games to none on the visiting Baltimore Orioles. Kansas City has simply been astonishing in the Major League Baseball playoffs - the first time that the Royals have been in the postseason since winning the World Series over the St. Louis Cardinals in 1985. Games 3, 4, and 5 are in Kansas City, so get to the game if you can. The way the Royals are playing, there may not even need to be a trip back to Baltimore.
Top 5 Games of Last Week (10/27/14 - 11/2/14)
We've got a little bit of everything this week - well, except soccer. Man U vs. Man City would've made the list most weeks, but competition was fierce this week, and the derby became a foregone conclusion once Man U went down a man. #5.
