Miami Marlins Details

The Marlins joined the National League as an expansion team in 1993. They were called the Florida Marlins until the 2012 season. When they moved to their current home at Marlins Park, the team updated its look and changed its name to the Miami Marlins.

The Marlins have qualified for the playoffs twice — in 1997 and 2003 — both times as a wild card team. But the Marlins made the most of their two trips to the postseason. They won the World Series both times. In 2003, the Marlins were able to rebound from a poor start after replacing manager Jeff Torborg with Jack McKeon. The Marlins faced the New York Yankees in the World Series. The Yankees’ payroll was over $100 million larger than the young Marlins team. But the Marlins, with players like World Series MVP Josh Beckett and future hall of fame catcher Ivan Rodriguez, were able to upset the Yankees in six games.

In 2017, the Marlins hosted the MLB All Star Game and placed second in the National League East. Although the Marlins did not make the playoffs, the team still had an exciting season. Edinson Volquez threw a no-hitter at home against the Diamondbacks, and Giancarlo Stanton kept hitting home runs. He became the first player since 2013 to hit over 50 HRs and finished the season with 59. Stanton was named the National League MVP after the end of the season.

An ownership group led by Yankees legend Derek Jeter purchased the Marlins in the offseason for $1.2 billion. Since the new group took over, the Marlins have made some roster changes – most notably trading Stanton to the Yankees.
