The History of Hip-Hop Concerts

Dating back to the late 1960s, hip-hop has been one of the most influential music genres over the years. With roots in the Bronx, New York, hip-hop soon became popular at block parties and small venues throughout the city. It wasn’t until the late 80s and early 90s that hip-hop really took off– from The Sugarhill Gang and Whodini to Run-D.M.C. and Snoop Dogg. The hip-hop genre is also closely intertwined with rap. Both rap and hip-hop have origins in West Africa, with a mix of blues and jazz sounds as well.

Born in Brooklyn, Jay-Z has been a strong advocate for the genre and once said, “We don't play guitars... but hip hop has put in its work like any other form of music...rap music is still evolving.” Other popular hip-hop stars include Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Kendrick Lamar, and more.
