Montreal Impact Playoff History
The Montreal Impact are an expansion MLS team, and they began MLS play in 2012. Previously, the Impact played in the NASL before becoming MLS’s third Canadian club. The Impact have had several MLS playoff appearances and have also made waves in continental competitions. Montreal was the first Canadian team to make the Final of the CONCACAF Champions League in 2015. They ultimately lost to Mexican side América 5-3. The Impact also won two Canadian Championships in 2013 and 2014.
Montreal played their first MLS game against a fellow Canadian team, the Vancouver Whitecaps, and lost 2-0. Despite the early struggles, the young team began breaking MLS attendance records. In the 2012 season, the Impact had some games with over 60,000 fans, setting the record for a single-game soccer attendance in Canada. Ultimately, Montreal finished their first season 7th place in the Eastern Conference and missed out on playoff action.
The Impact bounced back and qualified for their first MLS Cup playoffs in their second season. The Houston Dynamo eliminated the Impact in the First Knockout round. However, the Impact still received some silverware by becoming Canadian champions in 2013. Montreal did not return to the playoffs until 2015. Montreal beat rivals Toronto FC to advance to the quarterfinals. The Columbus Crew downed the Impact in the quarterfinals through an extra-time Kei Kamara goal, and Montreal fans would have to wait for further playoff success.
Didier Drogba became the club’s biggest signing when the Ivorian forward of Chelsea fame joined the club in the summer of 2015. He set the league alight and scored 11 goals in his first 11 games. With Drogba up top, the Impact had one of their best seasons in 2016. Montreal got over the quarterfinal hump by defeating the New York Red Bulls 3-0 over two legs to advance to the semifinals. Pablo Piatti scored two goals in the second game to bury New York’s hopes.
In the semifinals, Montreal faced rival Toronto FC once again in the playoffs. This time, Toronto came out on top of the Canadian clash in two thrilling matches. Montreal looked to be in control and went up 3-0 in the first game through goals from Dominic Oduro, Matteo Mancosu and Ambroise Oyongo. But, Toronto pegged two late goals back to be in with a chance for the second leg. After regulation in the second game, both teams were tied at 5-5, and the game went into extra time. Two quickfire Toronto goals sunk the Impact’s hopes to qualify for their first MLS Cup Final.
