Jamie xx to release solo debut
Jamie xx is putting the finishing touches on his highly-anticipated debut solo album, even as the XX begin work on their third studio LP.
Hey Jamie … busy much?
Jamie xx's much-talked-about debut will combine three years' worth of his own electronic music, with the album following years of singles, remixes, DJ mixes and 2011's "We're New Here," where he remixed more than a dozen songs by Gil Scott-Heron.
According to a recent interview with the Fader, Jamie xx's record is "nearing completion," and he recently oversaw mixing in New York. He told the magazine there's one track he needed to get a vocal on, but didn't know who the vocalist is going to be yet.
The English musician also let slip that the xx are working on the follow-up to 2012's "Coexist." He said, "We've got quite a lot of songs that are not finished, but I'm excited about it." He also said that compared to the last LP, "it feels a lot more free".
Jamie xx has also composed a contemporary ballet score inspired by Jonathan Safran Foer's book "Tree of Codes," which is slated to be performed at next year's Manchester International Festival set to take place from July 2nd through the 10th at Manchester Opera House.
"Tree of Codes" will be choreographed by Wayne McGregor, and will include soloists and other dancers from The Paris Opera Ballet and McGregor's Random Dance Company. According to a press release, it took the creative team two years to craft a ballet around the novel's concept.
Jamie XX begins to 'Bloom' (Created May 1, 2013)
Scrolling Jamie XX's official website offers just a glimpse of the talent of this English music producer and remix artist, whose resume features everything from Alica Keys' "When It's All Over" to a rework of Radiohead's "Bloom."
In order to understand the man behind the alter ego, lets go back in time. Jamie Smith's musical career began in 2007 when he joined the XX, hooking up with old school chums Romy Madley Croft, Baria Auereshi and Oliver Sim. Two years later, Jamie adopted the "XX" moniker as a surname as the band released a promotional mix for their debut album "xx" released on the FACT mix series of the FACT magazine. It not only went on to become platinum in the UK, but spark Jamie to work with artists like Adele, Florience + The Machine and more.
As 2010 dawned, Jamie began working with Gil Scott-Heron on his album "I'm New Here." The first remix single, "NY is Killing Me," was followed the "I'll Take Care Of U." Both songs prompted an outcry by critics and fans, but ultimately the project as a whole received critical acclaim and was called a "masterpiece in its own right" by the BBC.
Jamie's single, "Far Nearer"/"Beat For" was released in the summer of 2011 and selected as Best New Track by Pitchfork Media. Later that year, he produced the title track of Drake's second album, "Take Care," and later did several reworks for the Radiohead song "Bloom."
