In addition to being a great place to live and work, Charlotte is also a great place to catch a live show. Charlotte has a good number of venues for live theater and other performances. Even the 20,000+ capacity Spectrum Center, the home arena for the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets, can become a venue for live shows such as Disney on Ice, which recently came to Charlotte to perform Frozen.
Much more of Charlotte’s live theater happens at the theaters and playhouses of the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. The Center opened in 1992 and entertains 630,000 people each year with Broadway shows, dance productions, and family friendly theater. The Center’s main complex includes the Belk Theater, the Booth Playhouse, and the Stage Door Theater.
The Belk Theater is the largest venue in the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. The theater seats just over 2000 guests and is arranged in a “contemporary European horseshoe,” which the venue says generates an “intimate atmosphere and world-class acoustics.” Recent and upcoming shows at the Belk Theater include Rent, Peppa Pig Live, The Sound of Music, Waitress, and The Phantom of the Opera. Hamilton is coming to Belk Theater in October of 2018.
Blumenthal Performing Arts also presents shows at Ovens Auditorium, allowing the city to host even more top-quality theater. Ovens Auditorium is a historic venue that has hosted events from Bob Dylan concerts to Harlem Globetrotters basketball games. Seating in the auditorium is available on orchestra and mezzanine levels and two balcony levels. Upcoming live shows at Ovens Auditorium include the Broadway musical On Your Feet!, the legendary musical based on Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables, and the Jack Black film-inspired School of Rock musical. The Auditorium also hosts other types of live events, such as book tours like An Evening with David Sedaris.
