About Lou Reed (Created May 8, 2013)
Like a chameleon, Lou Reed has been able to reinvent himself many times over. Once a 'glam' rocker, he morphed into an avant-garde artist, then segued into standard rock & roll. Yet, he remains an artist recognized as one dedicated to creating meaningful, contemporary work over the last five decades.
Imagine, if you will, an artist in a bygone era with lyrics that explored kinky sex, drug use and abuse, homosexuality, suicide, depression and transvestites. Reed not only incorporated such 'themes' into his music, he rocketed to fame in the 60's much the way supposed 'controversial' artists have today.
Though more recognized for his solo work later on, Reed's time as the lead singer for the Velvet Underground is impossible to ignore and was much more than a footnote in his career. The group released four studio albums with Reed at the helm, and he wrote a plethora of songs they recorded, including "Heroin," "Sister Ray," "All Tomorrow's Parties," "What Goes On" and so many more.
When Reed left the Underground in August 1970, it set the stage for a solo career that was rife with outrageous behavior, 'electric noise' and vintage material. Albums like "The Blue Mask" (1982) and "New Sensations" (1984) were fairly successful, while "New York" (1989) was both a commercial and critical success. There was a re-formation of the Velvet Underground in 1993, and Reed has had his hands in a wealth of projects every since. One of the most recent included joining forces with Metallica to create "Lulu," an album of fresh studio material in 2011. In 2012 he contributed vocals to the track, "The Wanderlust" on Metric's 2012 album "Synthetica."

“Do you guys like pizza?” asked Macaulay Culkin moments after emerging on stage at Brooklyn Bowl. “Do you like rock songs about pizza?” The actor, smirking at the crowd behind dark sunglasses, was met with affirming cheers. (Not that 99% of people would say “no” to either of those questions.) Culkin and his four bandmates--collectively…Read more
