West Virginia Mountaineers Basketball Details
Just like heaven, West Virginia … or so the John Denver song says. If you’re a hoops fan in the Mountaineer State, get yourself to Morgantown for a college basketball experience.
The Mountaineers first laced ‘em up for the 1903-04 season, and have played in two national championship games. They won the NIT title in 1942, and lost the NCAA final in 1959.
The 1959 squad was led by one of the greatest basketball players of all time: Jerry West, who you might otherwise know as the legendary NBA player, executive and image depicted in the league’s logo. The Chelyan, WV native led his Mountaineer teams to an 81-12 record over three seasons – earning All-America recognition every year – while averaging 29.5 points and 16.5 rebounds per game as a senior.
West isn’t the only native West Virginian to make a big impact on his state’s university. Morgantown native Bob Huggins was hired as the school’s head coach in 2007, and led the team to a Final Four appearance in 2010.
West Virginia competes in the Big 12 conference, which it joined in 2012. The school’s oldest rival is Pitt, against whom it first played in 1906.
Home games have been played in the WVU Coliseum since 1970. The engineers that designed the building ensured that crowd noise would bounce off the ceiling directly back toward the court, helping to make it one of the most raucous college basketball venues in the nation.
When country roads take you home to West Virginia, make sure to visit Morgantown for a memorable basketball game. Get your tickets now!
