About Chris Brown
Chris Brown releases "X"
It's a trying time to be Chris Brown. The rapper's sixth studio album, once titled "Carpe Diem" but later changed to "X," was released on September 16, 2014. It should've been an uplifting time for Brown, but other things have clouded the album drop date.
First and foremost, though "X" debuted at No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard 200 charts, it had first-week sales of just 145,644 copies. This despite an appearance on the project by Kendrick Lamar and production from Diplo and Danja. In fact, the album's lead single, "Fine China" had debuted all the way back on April 1, 2013 – a delay of about 17 months between the single and the album release dates.
Muddying the water were reports that on August 9, 2013, Brown suffered a seizure while at Record Plant Studios in Hollywood, California. When paramedics arrived, Brown reportedly refused to receive treatment and also refused to be transported to a hospital, having told first responders that has suffered from seizures since childhood The next day, Brown's representative reported the seizure was caused by "intense fatigue and extreme emotional stress, both due to the continued onslaught of unfounded legal matters and the nonstop negativity."
Months later, Brown was arrested for felony assault in Washington D.C. It sparked a bizarre series of incidents in which Brown spent 36 hours in a Washington jail, returned to California to report to his probation officer, then elected to enter a rehab facility. He expected to stay there for three months, but was reportedly kicked out of the facility for acting violently. He was later sentenced to 90 days at an anger management facility, kicked out of that facility, and sent to jail. He was released just after midnight on June 2, 2014.
Brown can't escape his bad-boy rep (Updated February 7, 2013)
He's flashy. He's talented. And he's also one of the biggest pop starts in music. But Chris Brown has never been able to fully escape the bad boy image bestowed on him when, in 2009, he pleaded guilty to assaulting girlfriend Rihanna. It not only became one of the biggest celebrity news stories of the year, but the incident forced Brown into seclusion and resulted in his music being pulled from rotation on several radio stations.
Until the assault, which prevented Rihanna from taking the stage at the Grammy Awards, Brown was riding high. He was the first male artist in more than a decade to hit Number One with a debut single in 2005. His songs like "Run It!" and "Kiss Kiss" climbed again and again into the top of the charts. His second studio album, "Exclusive," was certified double platinum behind releases like "With You" and "Forever," and Brown crossed from music to acting when he made an appearances on UPN's "One on One," The N's "Brandon T. Jackson Show," and FOX's "The O.C." He then jumped to the silver screen when he made his film debut in "Stomp the Yard."
Then came 'the incident.' In the aftermath, Brown was sentenced to five years probation and six months of community service. Suddenly, his NAACP Image Awards, American Music Awards and host of BET Awards seemed to fall by the wayside. The public backlash and constant media attention seemed endless, until Brown refocused on his music. His third album, "Graffiti," fell short in sales, but was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Contemporary R&B Album, and a collaboration with the Tank was nominated for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
Weeks after the 2011 Grammy Awards, Brown released his fourth album, "F.A.M.E." and watched it rise to the top of the Billboard 200 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Charts. It also won the 2012 Grammy for Best R&B Album, but his fifth album, "Fortune," was ripped by critics in the summer of 2013.
Brown's sixth studio album, currently titled "Carpe Diem," is set to be released in 2013. He was back in the headlines in February when the Los Angeles County district attorney's office accused him of not completing the community service ordered when he pleaded guilty to the felony assault charge. The motion also accused Brown of violating probation by punching singer Frank Ocean at a recording studio and threatening to "bust" – or shoot – the singer.
