Allan Holdsworth cancels tour
Will Allan Holdsworth be back? That's the question many of his fans are asking after Holdsworth canceled his European tour back in November, as well as all dates for May 2014.
The first indication that Holdsworth was pulling back from time on the road came from his booking manager back in the fall. MoonJune Records and Management released a statement that began, "Dear friends and fans of Allan in the UK, Holland, Germany, Belgium and France. We regret to say that we have to cancel the upcoming European tour in November and to postpone our European plans for May 2014." The statement later continued, "We apologize to all fans for the inconvenience. Allan will take a well deserved break and focus strictly on personal matters. MoonJune Records & Management will issue another statement about upcoming plans related to Allan's career later."
Though no reason was given for Holdsworth canceling his tour, several websites and venues cited "illness" as a key factor. At least one (the Borderline London) expected Holdworth's gig to be rescheduled at some point this year, along with a band that should have included bassist Jimmy Haslip and drummer Virgil Donati at dates in Chesterfield, Manchester, High Wycombe, and London, among other locations.
Refunds for Holdsworth's tour are available at point of purchase. The guitarist, who has been laying low since the cancellations were announced, also recently backed out of a planned tour in Mexico.
Allan Holdsworth Frets Over Decades-Long Career (Created April 24, 2013)
Widely considered to be one of the most talented instrumentalists in all of jazz fusion, Allan Holdsworth has released more than a dozen studio albums as a solo artist and has played on through a music career that has lasted some four decades and counting.
It speaks to Holdsworth's talent, obviously, that he learned to play piano before he ever picked up a guitar. But once he did, it certainly came naturally. Before long, he had also mastered the violin, responded to the tutelage of renowned saxophonist Ray Warleigh and appeared on the self-titled debut album of progressive rockers Tempest in 1973. That, as it turned out, was just the beginning of Holdworth's ping-pong between projects, including a brief union with U.S. drummer Tony Williams and appearances with progressive rockers Gong on several albums in the late 70's.
It was also in 1976 when Holdsworth decided to tackle his very first solo project, but through the years has been noted not simply for his music, but for his mathematical knowledge of a fretboard and a wide array of complex cord progressions. Among his many accomplishments, he was one of the first musicians to use a Synthaxe (a cross between a synthesizer, guitar and saxophone), and in the 90's created his own signature guitar model with the Carvin company.
Holdsworth's "The Sixteen Men of Tain" (2000) was his first release to feature an all-acoustic rhythm section. This was followed by his first live release, and he eventually released a career retrospective in 2005.
