Cats in Philadelphia, PA Details
Cats is one of the most beloved musicals of all time, performed in over 30 countries and translated into more than 15 languages since it opened in 1981. From the creative mind of Andrew Lloyd Webber (Phantom of the Opera), the characters in Cats aren’t the only thing that set this record-breaking musical apart from the rest. Based on T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats (1939), many of the songs are Eliot’s verse set to Webber’s music. One major exception to that rule is, of course, the show’s most famous song, “Memory.” With Lyrics by Trevor Nunn (Starlight Express and Sunset Boulevard), “Memory” has been recorded by over 150 professional singers and covered by countless Broadway fans who can’t get enough of this hauntingly beautiful song.
Cats is a sung-through musical, meaning all lines are sung with the exception of the occasional spoken phrase within songs. Cats is also known for its dance-centered content where the choreography is the focus rather than an enhancement to the singing. Many Broadway shows of the era relied on simple choreography that was easily executed while the ensemble sang complex songs. But Cats broke away from the traditional and is a masterpiece of technical moves performed by gifted dancers. One of the most original concepts among Broadway shows, it’s no wonder Cats has been going strong and breaking records for almost forty years. Cats has appeared in Philadelphia before, including a stop on its first national tour in 1986, and again in 2004.
The Forrest Theatre in Philadelphia, PA is an iconic venue built in 1927 for an astounding $2 million, which translates to about $27 million today. The creation of celebrated architect Herbert J. Krapp, The Forrest Theatre has long been a proving ground for plays and musicals vying for a run on Broadway. The Women (1936)m Funny Girl (1963), Chicago (1975) and The Music Man (1957) are just a few of the Broadway smash hits that previewed at the Forrest Theatre.
Cats has received dozens of award nominations since it premiered in 1981. With over two dozen awards won, Cats has been one of the most beloved musicals both on and off Broadway for nearly four decades. Among the awards won throughout the years, Cats has won 8 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Choreography, and Best Direction of a Musical, all in 1983. In 1984, Cats won a Grammy Award for Best Cast Show Album. International performances of Cats have also received awards from the Moliére Award for Best Musical in Paris (1989), to the Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards for Best Performance and Best Technical Contribution in South Africa (2001).
