Hootie and the Blowfish set for 20-year anniversary (Updated August 22, 2013)
Even with his feet firmly planted in the country world, Darius Rucker has not put Hootie and the Blowfish in his (Cracked) Rear View mirror. The band not only performs the occasional charity concert each year, there's a brief tour planned for 2014 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the group's breakthrough 1994 album, "Cracked Rear View."
The aforementioned album, of course, is the one that produced a string of hit singles like "Let Her Cry," "Hold My Hand" and "Only Wanna Be With You," which still receive heavy rotation on adult contemporary stations. The album would go on to become the 16th best-selling album of all-time in the United States.
Of course, Rucker himself has scored three No. 1 country albums since then. He's certainly in no hurry to leave behind the genre, though he has talked of another big tour and at least one more album for Hootie and the Blowfish. Until more details are announced, fans will have to be satisfied with the group's philanthropic efforts. For two nights only, they convene in Charleston, S.C. at Family Circle Magazine in conjunction with "Homegrown Family Day" benefiting schools in the Charleston area.
Back in Charleston just a short time ago, Rucker received a different kind of honor – a street sign. The 'Wagon Wheel' singer was on hand when a new road, Darius Rucker Boulevard, was unveiled in his honor on August 12, 2013. The road leads up to the North Charleston Coliseum, where Rucker played with Hootie and the Blowfish shortly after the venue opened.
Hootie and the Blowfish Tickets** - The Immortals of the '90s Pop Bands
That is, for sure, a fitting title for such a band. When the music industry was saturated with all kinds of grunge music from head to toe during the '90s, one band called Hootie and the Blowfish actually took the whole music arena by storm, forming in 1989 in South Carolina. With vocalist and guitarist Darius Rucker and members Mark Bryan, Dean Felber, and Jim 'Soni' Sonefeld spearheading their intent to play the kind of music they loved, an inevitable record deal was looming in the horizon, and Atlantic Records was the name. The company signed Hootie and the Blowfish in 1994 to mark the start of their remarkable music career.
Hootie and the Blowfish Tickets - The Music of the Blowfish
Let's not forget Hootie, though. Cracked Rear View was their debut album, and to this date (unless there's something else out there, which wouldn't be surprising given the staggering songwriting skills and ability to just crank out more and more music content!) it's the band's most popular album. Featuring such singles as 'Hold My Hand,' 'Let Her Cry,' 'Only Wanna Be With You,' and 'Time,' the album earned the band enough clout to return with a second album in 1996 called _Fairweather Johnson, an album that sold 13 million copies in the States. Not too shabby. Entering into the new millennium, Hootie and the Blowfish continued bringing on the music, but will always be remembered for their iconic first album, an album that defined the '90s.
Hootie and the Blowfish Tickets - The Sound and Style of Hootie
In that same respect, let's not leave out the Blowfish -- because that Blowfish had style. The kind of music the band typically played could be best described as a sort of blues-rock that was so easy-going, you could rest yourself in a hammock and enjoy it. Without sleeping. There was no 'easy listening' here. But Rucker's voice? Let's just say he was mellow and smooth. And that's what stood out the most from Hootie and the Blowfish.
