The Book of Mormon in Tucson Details
After seeing the musical Avenue Q in 2003, Trey Parker and Matt Stone met with the musical’s co-writer Robert Lopez and started working on The Book of Mormon. The Book of Mormon is the runaway Broadway hit that took the stage by storm in 2011 and shows no signs of slowing down.
The creation of Parker and Stone (South Park), The Book of Mormon is a musical comedy that follows the story of a Mormon missionary in Uganda. While the musical does poke fun at Mormon missionaries, the prevailing theme is the power of love and service. Despite the indifferent response of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the church did ultimately buy advertising space in the show’s playbill. While Parker and Stone are known for their edgy and sometimes crass show South Park, The Book of Mormon goes a different route and has been received with overwhelmingly positive acclaim. After success with staging the workshops in 2008, producers Scott Rudin and Anne Garefino chose to open The Book of Mormon directly on Broadway instead of premiering off-Broadway like most productions do. The gamble paid off and by 2017 it had grossed over $500 million, making it one of the most successful musicals of all time.
The Book of Mormon has been nominated for dozens of awards, winning more than 30. The show won an astounding 9 Tony Awards in 2011, including Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Orchestrations. It also won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album in 2012. Additionally, The Book of Mormon has received 5 Drama Desk Awards, and 4 Outer Critics Circle Awards, all in 2011.
