About Widespread Panic Tickets
Widespread Panic emerged from the vibrant Athens, Georgia music scene in the early 1980s, where founding members John Bell and Michael Houser began jamming as college students in 1981. By 1986, the lineup had solidified with the addition of Dave Schools and drummer Todd Nance, and the band played its first official show as “Widespread Panic” at Athens’ Mad Hatter Ballroom. Known for marathon gigs—sometimes four-hour shows—the group built a loyal grassroots following through relentless touring and weekly jam sessions at the Uptown Lounge. Their acclaimed debut album, Space Wrangler (1988), alongside independent releases like Coconut Image and Coconuts, laid the foundation for national recognition.
The 1990s marked Widespread Panic’s ascent into mainstream acclaim. Signing with Capricorn Records in 1991, they released their self-titled major-label debut and joined the landmark H.O.R.D.E. tour alongside acts like Phish and Blues Traveler. Their 1997 album Bombs & Butterflies produced radio hits such as “Aunt Avis” and “Hope in a Hopeless World,” while the live double album Light Fuse, Get Away catalyzed a massive free street concert in their hometown that drew around 100,000 fans. Their reputation as the quintessential “road warrior” was cemented through repeated chart-topping performances at Red Rocks, Bonnaroo appearances, and live albums like Night of Joy, showcasing their improvisational brilliance.
Despite tragic losses—co-founder Michael Houser died in 2002 and drummer Todd Nance left in 2016—the band has persisted, bringing on Jimmy Herring in 2006 and later Duane Trucks, ensuring the music endured. With over 3 million albums sold, induction into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 2008, and a record-setting streak of run sold‑outs at venues like Red Rocks (60 performances) and Atlanta’s Philips Arena , Widespread Panic continues to thrive. Their legendary concerts—each uniquely improvised and often extending beyond three hours—underscore their legacy as one of America’s most devoted live rock acts.
