With a cheeky, relatable demeanor—and a signature head of red hair—to accompany his staggering musical talent, singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran has rocketed to international stardom. Sheeran first made major waves in January 2011 with No. 5 Collaborations Project, which landed him a deal with Atlantic Records. That fall he released his debut studio album, + (pronounced “plus”). The album debuted at No. 1 on the United Kingdom charts and peaked at No. 5 in the United States on the strength of its lead single, “The A Team.” While his second album, X (“multiply”) wouldn’t be released until June 2014, Sheeran stayed busy in the meantime: He wrote songs for One Direction and Taylor Swift, collaborating with Swift on the duet “Everything Has Changed” and joining her on tour in 2013.
X was a smash hit, selling more three million copies in the UK and over four million in the States. The album's first two singles “Sing” and “Thinking Out Loud” showcase his wide-ranging abilities, with the former incorporating elements of hip-hop and the latter becoming one of the most commercially successful love ballads in recent years. In March 2017, Sheeran dropped his third studio album, ÷ (“divide”). Selling 672,000 copies in the UK in its first week of availability, ÷ became the nation’s fastest selling album by a male artist. Its single “Shape of You” hit No. 1 in 30 countries. Despite all that Sheeran has already achieved, he likely has plenty more music to give us—he’s showing no signs of slowing down.
