Def Leppard readies new album

It's been a year of highs and lows for Def Leppard, beginning with an announcement in the summer of 2013 that Vivian Campbell had developed Hodgkin's lymphoma, a malignant form of cancer that affects the lymph nodes. He continued performing with the band, and no shows were canceled or rescheduled at Campbell's request. By November, he announced he was in remission. However, the cancer has since remerged, and he is now receiving chemotherapy once again. Campbell has said should the cancer once again enter remission, he will undergo a stem-cell transplant.

Def Leppard and Campbell stayed busy in 2014, first with the February 11 release of a remastered deluxe edition of their 1996 album "Slang" after a lengthy delay. The new version featured 30 tracks, including demos, B-sides and previously unreleased material.

From June 23 to August 31, Def Leppard and Kiss hit the road on a 42-city tour, with a dollar per ticket donated to charities including Wounded Warrior Project.

Def Leppard has also been hard at work on its first new studio album since 2008's "Songs From the Sparkle Lounge." Drummer Rick Allen recently told The Pulse of Radio the band has actually been recording for quite a while and had 16 or 17 songs that were 80 to 85 percent done.

Campbell told a Canadian radio station that because the band tends to record in stages, they aren't exactly sure what the end result will be. He went on to joke, "All I can tell you is my involvement was with the first part of the record, and it was a hard rock record at that stage, so if it comes out being wussy, I'm not accepting blame. I'm throwing my hands in the air."

Def Leppard vs. the Record Label (Updated January 16, 2013)

When it comes to the biggest names in music, the last thing you expect to hear is that one of them is at war with their record label. Or in the case of Def Leppard, their former record label.

January 2013 found the band re-recording as much of their back catalogue as possible after failing to reach an agreement with Universal over digital releases of their songs.

"We're trying to wrestle back our career and ownership of these songs," frontman Joe Elliot told Classic Rock magazine at the end of 2012. "They [the label] own the originals, we're at loggerheads with them over the digital rights. … we're not going to let them exploit us to the extent that they're trying to." To that note, Def Leppard cut five acoustic songs performed during their Rock of Ages tour for a medley released to iTunes. And they won't stop there. The band says its ultimate goal is to wrestle back their career and get the same rate for digital music as they do when they sell CDs.

As the fight continues, Def Leppard will begin a three-week residency at Las Vegas' Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on March 22. They will perform the album 'Hysteria' in its entirety during the shows, which will take place at the 4,000 seat club called the Joint. Also part of the show will be a greatest hits segment. Def Leppard are following in the footsteps of Guns N'Roses and Motley Crue, both of whom had successful runs at the venue in 2012. The shows will run through April 10, 2013.
