Spice Girls Details
The Spice Girls are a pop group formed in the early 1990s in London, England. The five members of the group include Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell, and Victoria Beckham. Of course, the public knew the members by their signature “spice” nicknames: Scary, Sporty, Baby, Ginger, and Posh, respectively.
In July of 1996, the Spice Girls released their debut single “Wannabe” in the United Kingdom. The song was an instant hit and the group soon gained ground on all the top charts. Just four months later, the Spice Girls released their debut album, “Spice.” In just seven weeks the album had sold nearly 2 million copies in the UK alone. That made the Spice Girls the fastest-selling British act since the Beatles.
The Spice Girls continued to ride the wave of this initial success and performed around the world for many groups of fervent fans. In fact, they were breaking records left and right and gaining an abundance of sponsorship deals as well. Of course, with any great rise to fame comes a fair share of ups and downs. Four years into the group’s global stardom, Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice) announced she was leaving the group. Fans were left shocked – would the group continue to thrive as four?
Indeed, the Spice Girls continued to release new music and tour without Ginger Spice. In November of 2000, the group released their final studio album, “Forever.” Just one month following the release of this album, the ladies announced an indefinite hiatus so that they could chase solo careers and unique pursuits. It would be seven years until the girls toured together again – all five of them.
To the delight of their fans, the Spice Girls announced a worldwide reunion tour in 2007 and tickets sold out almost immediately. The tour was an incredible success. In July 2018, the group announced a second reunion tour -- however, Victoria Beckham would not be joining this time around. The second reunion tour is set to begin in May of 2019.
Spice Girls Setlist
Over the years, the Spice Girls have racked up their fair share of awards. “Wannabe” won them the MTV Video Music Award for Best Dance Video in 1997, while their “Spice” album earned them the Juno Award for International Album of the Year. Below are a few of their most popular songs that you can expect to hear on their reunion tour:
- Too Much
- 2 Become 1
- Viva Forever
- Spice Up Your Life
- Say You’ll Be There
- Who Do You Think You Are
Through their music and positive attitudes, the Spice Girls paved the way for those girl bands and solo female artists who came after them.
The Spice Girls in Concert
So, what’s it like to see this incredible pop group in concert? It’s fun, entertaining, and bustling with the spirit of undeniable “Girl Power.” While the girls are now in their 40s with families of their own, they still know how to put on a show for their fans. Of course, you can expect some flashy costume changes that will have you thinking you’ve traveled back to the 90s! Since Posh Spice won’t be a part of the second reunion tour it won’t be exactly the same but it’s still a show worth seeing if you’re a fan of these lovely ladies.
