Utah Utes Football Details

Utah has never won a national championship, but that doesn’t mean this isn’t a successful program. The Utes have won 24 conference titles and have a ridiculous 16-4 record in bowl games. The fans at Rice-Eccles Stadium can pretty much always expect a tremendous performance from their team, and a lot of that has to do with great coaching. The most notable guy that has led this program is Urban Meyer. Meyer was with Utah in 2003 and 2004, and he led the Utes to a 22-2 record in that time. The team won the Liberty Bowl in 2003 and followed that up with a win in the Fiesta Bowl in 2004. But the team isn’t in bad hands now either. Kyle Whittingham is now the coach of this team, and he has been in that position since 2005 (Although he actually did coach that Fiesta Bowl team in 2004). Heading into this season, Whittingham had compiled a 104-50 record with Utah. There are a ton of other schools that have tried to pry him away, but the fans in Salt Lake City are still lucky enough to have him.

The Utes lost their star running back from last year’s team, Joe Williams, but the team got back quarterback Troy Williams. Last season, Williams threw for 2,757 yards with 15 touchdowns and only eight interceptions. He also added 235 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. His numbers might appear rather pedestrian, but Williams can make all the plays required for a good offense. He will also be leaned on a lot more heavily with Joe Williams now taking handoffs for the San Francisco 49ers. The Utes also happen to have an absolute stud on defense, as Lowell Lotulelei is back and making plays for this Utah team. He is the brother of 2013 NFL first round pick Star Lotulelei, and many think that he is even better than his brother was.
