Fiesta Bowl Details

The Fiesta Bowl is one of the many bowl games played at the end of the American college football season. Not all bowl games are created equal, and the Fiesta Bowl is one of the bowls that has been selected to be part of the College Football Playoff (CFP) and New Year’s Six (NY6) bowl groups. This makes the Fiesta one of the most important and most viewed bowls in the country on an annual basis.

Compared to the likes of the Rose Bowl, the Orange Bowl, and the Cotton Bowl, the Fiesta Bowl was a latecomer to the college football landscape. While those games were first played in 1902, 1935, and 1937 respectively, the first Fiesta Bowl game did not take place until 1971. This inaugural matchup saw No. 8 Arizona State defend its home turf in Tempe, besting Florida State 45-38 in a shootout. That game would start a trend of high-scoring Fiesta Bowls, games that would quickly elevate the status of the event.

Between 1971 and 2006 the Fiesta Bowl was played at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona. This changed in 2007 when the game was moved to a new state of the art stadium 20 miles down the road in Glendale, Arizona. This stadium change increased the capacity for the game to more than 63,000 people (up from over 53,000) and provided a better variety of seating options.

With college football traditionally focused on many teams in the Southeast and Midwest parts of the country, the desert Southwest was underserved by bowl tie-ins. By attracting quality matchups in its early years – such as Big Eight co-champion Nebraska vs. Arizona State in 1975 – the Fiesta Bowl quickly grew its profile. This profile only grew when Arizona and Arizona State joined the Pac-10 in 1978, with a shift to a New Year’s Day timeslot in 1981 all but confirming its place high up in the bowl game hierarchy. It is known today as one of College Football’s premier events each and every season.

The Fiesta Bowl is played on or around New Year’s Day every year. The advent of the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) and the CFP mean that the timeslot for the Fiesta Bowl is fluid depending on if the game, in any particular year, is a semi-final matchup to help determine the FBS national champion.
