Born and raised in Texas, Kelly Clarkson may be best known for winning the first season of the hit show American Idol in 2002. Clarkson was just 20 years old when she won American Idol and her career soon skyrocketed from there. However, her love of music began much earlier. While she didn’t have any professional training at a young age, Clarkson sang her heart out in high school musicals and talent shows. It wasn’t until later in high school that she started classical training. Clarkson turned down full scholarships to the University of Texas at Austin, the University of North Texas, and the Berklee College of Music in pursuit of making a musical career of her own. It wasn’t an easy path, though. Clarkson was turned down by many major record labels and she worked a variety of jobs to get by, including as a telemarketer and as a cocktail waitress. In 2002, Kelly Clarkson’s big break came by way of American Idol. After her win, her debut double-A-side single, “Before Your Love” and “Moment Like This”, was released in September of that same year. The single quickly climbed to number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart – in fact, it climbed so quickly that Clarkson beat out a nearly 40-year record set by The Beatles for the biggest leap to number one. From there, Kelly Clarkson proved that she was more than the winner of a TV talent competition. With one of the most powerful voices in the industry, Kelly Clarkson went on to work with the likes of Babyface, Diane Warren, and Reba McEntire. Clarkson is known for her pop and pop rock songs and has sold millions and millions of records over the years.
