About 50 Cent
The product of a broken home from the rough Jamaica neighborhood of Queens, New York, Curtis James Jackson III – known as 50 Cent – lived the life that he would write about, rap about and nearly die for. From an upbringing surrounded by drugs and crime to an attempt on his life in 2000, this is a man who became notorious for his bulletproof vest, pistol and iced crucifix. In other words, 50 Cent was no marketing gimmick. Here is a man who has truly lived the life of a hardcore rapper.
It's not hard to imagine where Jackson might be without the influence of people like Run-D.M.C.'s Jam Master Jay, who signed the aspiring artist to his JMJ Records label back in 1996. Though nothing much resulted from the union at the time, 50 Cent got his foot in the door with Trackmasters, a New York-based production duo known for their work with guys like Jay-Z. 50 Cent's first trio of singles gained instant traction under the Columbia sublabel, but just prior to the release of his debut album, he was shot nine times while sitting in a car on 161st Street in Queens. He survived, but his relationship with Columbia did not.
It's hard to put into so few words the success this rapper, entrepreneur, investor and actor finally attained. He ultimately rose to fame with the release of the albums "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" in 2003 and "The Massacre" in 2005. The former has been certified six times platinum, and he also gained notoriety as the leader of the East Coast hip hop group G-Unit.
50 Cent has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, and is a recipient of a Grammy award, 13 Billboard Music Awards, six World Music Awards, three American Music Awards and four BET Awards. Ranked as the number one rap artist of the 2000s by Billboard magazine, he released his fifth studio album, "Animal Ambition" on June 3, 2014, and is reported to be working on a sixth studio album, "Street King Immortal," due for a September 16th release.
50 Cent's Top 10 Hardest (Sprayin Bullets) Lines
"Go shorty, it's your birthday." Those handful of words that introduced 50 Cent to the masses became iconic, getting bumped by both young middle/upperclass (mostly) whites in the exurbs and lower class (mostly) blacks on the streets of 50's hood in Queens, New York. With Get Rich or Die Tryin, and a story that resonated…Read more
