The 7 through 10 seeds play in a Wednesday doubleheader, with the two winners advancing to Thursday’s quarterfinal quadruple-header. The semifinals are held Friday, with the championship game on Saturday. The winner of the Big 12 Conference Tournament receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. As they have dominated the Big 12 for years, it’s no surprise that the Kansas Jayhawks have won approximately half the tournaments in the conference’s history. Tourney MVPs have included future NBA superstars such as Paul Pierce (Kansas) and Kevin Durant (Texas). The most memorable Big 12 Tournament Final may have been the 2007 edition in Oklahoma City, when top-seeded Kansas battled Durant’s Texas Longhorns. Durant was only a freshman, but he dominated the action with 37 points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots. It wasn’t enough, as Kansas eked out an 88-84 overtime victory. Durant tallied 92 points in his three games to shatter the previous tournament record, and was selected as the weekend’s Most Valuable Player.
