Clippers vs. Rockets Details
Los Angeles Clippers vs. Houston Rockets
Contests between the Clippers and Rockets are always fun to watch, as both teams can boast some of the most exciting playing styles in basketball. When star player Chris Paul arrived in Los Angeles, he paired with Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan, and the team earned the nickname “Lob City” for its tendency to throw down huge alley-oops. In the 2016-17 season, the Rockets broke an NBA record and made more three pointers than any other team. They also attempted an NBA record 61 three pointers in one game during the 2016-17 season.
The 2015 Eastern Conference Semifinals was a contentious series between Los Angeles and Houston. The Clippers took a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series, thanks to strong performances from Blake Griffin and JJ Redick, but the Rockets were able to make an improbable comeback and win the next three games. The Rockets advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals, where they were eliminated by the eventual NBA Champion Golden State Warriors.
A trade between the Rockets and Clippers was one of the major stories of the 2017 offseason. The Clippers traded star player Chris Paul to the Rockets for a bundle of players: Patrick Beverley, Lou Williams, Sam Dekker, Montrezl Harrell, Darrun Hilliard, DeAndre Liggins, and Kyle Wiltjer all came to Los Angeles. The Clippers also received a protected first-round pick. Paul joins James Harden in Houston, and he adds another dynamic three point weapon to the Rockets. Paul’s history with the Clippers should add an interesting storyline to future matchups between the two teams.
Historic Clippers vs. Rockets Games
2015 Western Conference Semifinals, Game 3: The Clippers came into the game up 2-1 in the series, so the Rockets attempted to control the pace by intentionally fouling DeAndre Jordan, who is a below-average free throw shooter. Their strategy didn’t pay off: Jordan attempted 28 free throws in just the first half and made 14 out of 34 overall. The Clippers ran away with the game, blowing out the Rockets by a score of 128-95. With three wins in the semi finals, the Clippers were just one more win away from their first-ever appearance in the Conference Finals.
2015 Western Conference Semifinals, Game 6: The Rockets were down by 19 points in the second half, and it looked like the Clippers were on their way to the next round. But the Rockets made a monumental comeback. They made seven three point shots in the fourth quarter and went on a 23-2 run late in the game. The Rockets ultimately won 119-107 and forced a Game 7. The Rockets won the next game and advanced in the series.
When do the Rockets play the Clippers?
The Clippers and Rockets both play in separate divisions in the Western Conference. The Clippers play in the Pacific Division and the Rockets play in the Southwest. NBA teams in the same conference but separate divisions will play each other either three or four times a year. There is also always a chance that the two teams could meet in the first three rounds of the playoffs, as they often have.
