About The Cult
About The Cult
The Cult has been one of England's leading heavy metal bands since the early 1980s, thanks to songs like "She Sells Santuary," "Love Removal Machine" and "Fire Woman." Now, 30 years after the band's formation, they're working on their 10th studio album.
It's no wonder that The Cult has survived as long as it has. Their "heavy metal revivalist" sound has been likened to that of Led Zeppelin and other groups of great fame. They've also displayed touched of post-punk goth rock, had some turnover in their lineup, and kept a grip on both Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy as hangers-on (both continue to play with Chris Wyse and John Tempesta to make up the current incarnation of the band).
The Cult has come a long way since the early 1990s, when the group reportedly splintered due to lingering issues like alcohol abuse and various off-stage incidents. They split up in 1995, but reunited four years later and recorded their "Beyond Good and Evil" album. In 2006, the band reformed again for a number of world tour, and in 2007 finally released the album "Born into This."
It was July 2009 when Astbury announced The Cult would no longer record or produce any more studio albums, instead choosing to focus on EPs and Digital Releases. Eventually, he changed his mind and decided there would be another album "in the near future." Their ninth, entitled "Choice of Weapon,' bowed on May 22, 2013. The band is currently working on its 10th album, due for release in 2014.
