They look like the modern-day version of the Spice Girls or En Vogue. They elicit screams from adoring fans as if they were Destiny's Child or TLC. But the girl group 2NE1 is showcasing the continued (and dare we say unstoppable?) rise of Korean pop culture, and has to their name more than 30 million digital downloads.
The four-member group, formed by YG Entertainment in 2009, consists of CL, Minzy, Dara and Bom. Their name, 2NE1, is pronounced "to anyone" or "twenty one," and combines the phrases '21st century' and 'new evolution.' And since first appearing in "Lollipop," a commercial campaign for LG Electronics, the band has been (like their debut single suggests) on "Fire."
Two eponymous EPs in 2009 and 2011 have helped to propel their rising star even higher. The first spawned the number one single "I Don't Care," which netted them the Song of the Year award at the 2009 Mnet Asian Music Awards, and the follow-up singles "Go Away," "Lonely," and "I Am the Best" were also wildly successful. Their official Korean album debut, "To Anyone," helped them capture Album of the Year honors in 2010.
2NE1 officially debuted in Japan in September 2011 with a Japanese version of their second EP. They followed with one studio album, "Collection," and two more singles.
The group's All or Nothing World Tour includes stops in China, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Philippines, Japan, Malaysis and Indonesia, as well as possible venues in North America.
