The Cavs and Warriors have been the NBA’s major powerhouse teams since LeBron James returned to Cleveland for the 2014-2015 season. Both teams have played in the NBA for decades, but their contact was limited because they played in opposite conferences. However, from 2015-2017, the Cavs and Warriors have represented their conferences in the NBA Finals, and the rivalry between the two teams has developed against this high-stakes backdrop.

Golden State and Cleveland met in the NBA finals for the first time in 2015. Golden State, powered by the offense of that year’s MVP Stephen Curry, defeated the Cavs in six games.

The Warriors, who had the NBA’s best-ever record in 2016, took a three games to one lead over the Cavs in their first Finals rematch. But the Cavaliers would stun the Warriors and win the next three games (and their first ever NBA Championship).

Kevin Durant signed with the Warriors before the 2016-2017 season. The addition of Durant gave the Warriors one of the most stacked starting lineups of all time. The team swept its way through the playoffs and lost only one game to Cleveland in the Finals to capture its second championship in three years.

Game 6, 2015 NBA Finals: The end of the series where the rivalry began: the Warriors defeated the Cavaliers 105-97 to win their first championship since 1975. The Warriors’ Andre Iguodala won Finals MVP.

Game 7, 2016 NBA Finals: The Cavaliers finished an improbable comeback to win the NBA Championship after they had trailed three games to one in the series. The game is notable for LeBron James’s famous block on Andre Iguodala with the game tied near the end of the fourth quarter. The win gave LeBron James his first championship with his hometown Cavaliers and was the Cavs’ first since joining the NBA in 1970.

Game 5, 2017 NBA Finals: The Warriors put together a “superteam” with Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Draymond Green, and Klay Thompson all in the starting lineup. Golden State went undefeated in the playoffs up to the Finals and lost their only game in Game 4, as Cleveland avoided the sweep. Kevin Durant won his first championship and was finals MVP.

When do the Cavs play the Warriors?

Cleveland plays in the Eastern Conference, and the Warriors play in the West, so the two teams only play each other twice during the regular season. Both teams will host one home game against the other during the season. Of course, this rivalry was forged in the playoffs, and there’s always the possibility that the two teams will meet in the best-of-seven NBA Finals. The Cavaliers play their home games at Quicken Loans Arena, and the Warriors will play at Oracle Arena until they move to San Francisco’s Chase Center for the 2019-2020 season.
