Dear Evan Hansen in Chicago Details
Dear Evan Hansen follows the story of Evan Hansen, a high schooler who feels completely invisible. Held back by social anxiety, Evan struggles to make friends, leaving him feeling like an outsider in his own life. When tragedy throws Evan into the spotlight, a misunderstanding gives him a chance to reinvent himself. Rather than tell the truth and set the record straight, Evan decides to create a “better version” of himself and finally feels like he belongs. But like any façade, the lie Evan creates starts to unravel, and he’s forced to face the truth. Dear Evan Hansen is a masterpiece of raw human emotion expertly told through contemporary songs and hard-hitting lyrics. From the first note to the final curtain, Dear Evan Hansen is one of those musicals that has a profound impact on its viewers.
Dear Evan Hansen is directed by three-time Tony Award nominated Michael Greif, who directed the groundbreaking musicals Next to Normal and Rent. With music and lyrics by award winning duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (Smash and La La Land), it’s no wonder that Dear Evan Hansen has been so well received by audiences and critics alike.
Originally opened as the Oriental Theatre in 1926, the James M. Nederlander Theatre was designed by George L. and Cornelius W. Rapp. While it followed the movie palace trend of the time, it holds the distinction of being one of the first to create an immersive experience for audiences. Its lavish décor still features large mosaics of an exotic prince and princess, Buddhas, and elephant-throne lighting.
Many notable performers have graced the James M. Nederlander Theatre’s stage throughout its nearly one hundred years. Fanny Brice, Duke Ellington, Judy Garland, and Sophie Tucker have all performed at the theatre, as well as many other famous talents. In 1978 the theatre was added to the Federal National Registry of Historic Places, and in 1998 a full restoration was completed to bring the building to its original splendor. In 2000, Broadway in Chicago was formed, bringing countless Broadway hits to the stage. Wicked, Pretty Woman: the Musical, and Big Fish have all appeared at the James M. Nederlander Theatre in addition to many other favorites.
Dear Evan Hansen has been nominated for dozens of awards since its inception, winning over twenty. Among the most notable awards are the Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Musical Performance in a Daytime Program (2018 Today Show Performance), the Grammy Awards for Best Musical Theater Album (2018), and the Tony Award for Best Musical (2017).
