Dear Evan Hansen in New York Details
Dear Evan Hansen follows the story of Evan Hansen, a high schooler who feels completely invisible. Held back by social anxiety, Evan struggles to make friends, leaving him feeling like an outsider in his own life. When tragedy throws Evan into the spotlight, a misunderstanding gives him a chance to reinvent himself. Rather than tell the truth and set the record straight, Evan decides to create a “better version” of himself and finally feels like he belongs. But like any façade, the lie Evan creates starts to unravel, and he’s forced to face the truth. Dear Evan Hansen is a masterpiece of raw human emotion expertly told through contemporary songs and hard-hitting lyrics. From the first note to the final curtain, Dear Evan Hansen is one of those musicals that have a profound impact on us all.
Dear Evan Hansen is directed by three-time Tony Award nominated Michael Greif, who directed the groundbreaking musicals Next to Normal and Rent to the stage. With music and lyrics by award winning duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (Smash and La La Land), it’s no wonder that Dear Evan Hansen has been so well received by audiences and critics alike. Dear Evan Hansen has been playing in New York at the Music Box Theatre since its Broadway debut in November of 2016.
New York’s Music Box Theatre is the creation of architect C. Howard Crane. Opened in 1921, it was built by Irving Berlin and Sam H. Harris to house Berlin’s Music Box Revues. From 1921 to 1925 the Music Box Theatre ran a new musical every year. The 1925 showing of the play Cradle Snatchers starring Humphrey Bogart changed all that, turning the Music Box Theatre into one of the premiere stage venues of its time. Creative talents like George and Ira Gershwin, and George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart presented shows at the Music Box Theatre with great success. The theatre became such an icon that the Brown Theatre in Louisville, KY was modeled after it. With just under 1,000 seats, the Music Box Theatre is on the smaller side for a Broadway theatre, treating audiences to a more intimate show experience than the larger venues that are typical of musical theatres.
Dear Evan Hansen has been nominated for dozens of awards since its inception, winning more than twenty. Among the most notable awards are the Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Musical Performance in a Daytime Program (2018 Today Show Performance), the Grammy Awards for Best Musical Theater Album (2018), and the Tony Award for Best Musical (2017).
