Hamilton is the story of one of America’s Founding Fathers, Alexander Hamilton. Hamilton was an immigrant from the West Indies who went on to become an integral part of George Washington’s presidency, becoming America’s first Treasury Secretary and a key figure in the Revolutionary War. The musical is done in two acts and tells the story of Hamilton’s extraordinary life as told through historical events, in which he crosses paths with famous figures like Aaron Burr, Marquis De Lafayette, Thomas Jefferson, and of course the first POTUS, George Washington. New York City is the original home of Hamilton where it first premiered at The Public Theater (the former Astor Library) in Lower Manhattan in February of 2015. The show moved to the Richard Rodgers Theater in August of that yearfor its Broadway debut.
The Richard Rodgers Theatre is a historic theater on 46th Street between Broadway and 8th Avenue that dates back to 1925 when it was called “Chanin’s 46th Street Theatre” after owner and architect Irwin Chanin. When the Nederlander Organization purchased the theater in 1981, they renovated the venue and later renamed it the Richard Rodgers Theatre after the famous award-winning composer. The theater has hosted manyTony award-winning plays and musicals, including Chicago, In the Heights, and Damn Yankees. The theater was renovated again in 2006 and now includes the Richard Rodgers Gallery where you can find memorabilia from the theater’s historical collection.
Hamilton has received numerous accolades and awards, including eleven Tony Awards, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album. The aforementioned original off-Broadway performances earned the musical eight Drama Desk Awards including Outstanding Musical. The London production of Hamilton also received top accolades at the Olivier Awards, including the award for Best New Musical. In addition to awards, Hamilton has seen record ticket sales and sold out performances since its debut.
