Houston Dynamo Playoff History

The Houston Dynamo began as an MLS expansion team and played their inaugural season in 2006. The team experienced instant success and made the MLS Cup Finals four times in their first seven seasons. In this early period, Brian Ching became a club legend and appeared as an All-Star five times for the club.

For an expansion team, the Dynamo got off to the perfect start. The Houston club qualified for the playoffs at the first time of asking and faced Chivas USA in the quarterfinals. Over two legs, the Dynamo defeated Chivas 3-2 to advance to the semifinals to take on the Colorado Rapids. The Dynamo went down early, but Scottish international Paul Dalglish scored two goals to put Houston in the lead. Brian Mullan then added another to put Houston into the playoff final of their first MLS season. The upstart Dynamo faced the New England Revolution in the 2006 MLS Cup Final in one of the most memorable finals in league history. The game went into extra time scoreless, and the score stayed level until the 113th minute when the Revolution’s Taylor Twellman found the back of the net. But, only a minute later Brian Ching headed home an equalizer to force the first penalty shootout in MLS Cup history. Goalkeeper Pat Onstad saved the decisive penalty kick to propel Houston to a championship in the first season.

The Dynamo wasted no time in achieving their second championship, when just the next year saw them crowned as repeat MLS champions. In a rematch of the 2006 MLS Cup Final, the Dynamo squared off against the Revolution, but this time the Houston side did not need penalties or extra time to dispatch New England. Taylor Twellman put his team ahead just as in the second game, but two second half goals from Joseph Ngwenya and Dwayne De Rosario meant Twellman and the Revolution once again faced heartbreak. The win made the Ching and De Rosario led side somewhat of an MLS expansion dynasty.

The next three seasons, Houston failed to reach the MLS Cup and even missed out on the playoffs in 2010. But, the Dynamo once again made back-to-back MLS Cup Finals appearances in 2011 and 2012. This time however, the Houston side were on the wrong side of a repeat final pairing. The powerful LA Galaxy led by Landon Donovan and Robbie Keane defeated the Dynamo in 2011 1-0, and the next year by a 3-1 score.

Despite these finals losses, the Dynamo are still one of the most successful clubs in MLS history.
