Iowa Hawkeyes Football Details

What head coach Kirk Ferentz has done at Iowa is truly remarkable. After going 4-19 in his first two seasons with the Hawkeyes, Ferentz was 131-73 in his next 16 seasons with the team. The Hawkeyes were in the Rose Bowl as recently as 2015, as they went 12-2 and 8-0 in Big Ten play. Now Ferentz is hoping to take this program to the next level. Iowa has won one national championship in school history (1958), but it wouldn’t be surprising if the team were to win one in the near future. The fans in Iowa City have been able to see a consistently excellent team on the field at Kinnick Stadium, and the Hawkeyes have only improved over the past few seasons.

The strength of this Iowa program has been the running game and defense in recent years, and that isn’t any different in 2017. The team is rather inexperienced under center, but Akrum Wadley is back to dazzle out of the backfield. Last season, Wadley rushed for 1,081 yards with 10 touchdowns. He also caught 36 passes for 315 yards and three touchdowns. He was, however, part of a 50/50 committee last season, and he now poses a much bigger threat as the top dog in the offense. Iowa is also excellent defensively, as the team returned most of its players from last year’s unit. That group allowed only 17.9 PPG (t-10th in NCAA) and opposing teams will be having nightmares about facing the Hawkeyes this season, too.
