New York Jets vs. Buffalo Bills
With so little room for error in the AFC East, games between the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills carry a great deal of importance, as both teams have to make sure to win to avoid losing ground to the New England Patriots. The teams first met in 1960, and have played over 110 times in their history. Both teams have taken turns enjoying a great deal of success, with each squad making deep runs in the AFC playoffs at different times thanks to key players on both sides of the ball.
The Buffalo Bills were lucky to enjoy the services of Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, and Andre Reed during their run of four straight Super Bowl appearances, which gave them the upper hand for that period of this rivalry. On the Jets side, defensive stalwarts like Mo Wilkerson and Darrelle Revis helped New York enjoy a period of success over Buffalo as the Jets played for the AFC Championship.
Both teams have also shared a recent common bond, in that both have had Rex Ryan as their head coach in the past. Ryan coached the Jets to the AFC Championship Game at one point, and had a reputation for installing strong defenses for both teams before his tenure with both franchises came to an end.
Historic Jets vs. Bills Games
In 1981, the Jets and Bills played in the only playoff game that they would ever square off in, with that game taking place during the Wild Card round. Buffalo got out to a massive 24-0 lead, before the Jets stormed back to trail just 31-24. While the Bills did hold on to secure the win, the spirited comeback by the Jets made that game one of the most memorable in a rivalry that has featured many memorable contests.
Jets fans were finally able to celebrate a division title in 1998, when they secured the franchise's first ever AFC East crown by defeating the Bills 17-10. Vinny Testaverde shined in that game, throwing two touchdown passes, one to Wayne Chrebet, and the other to Dedric Ward, which ended up being the game winning touchdown. Testaverde did not turn the ball over in that game, and had a quarterback rating of 115.1.
